Incorporating Bricks into Your Home’s Design

brick-wall-exposedWhen most people think about bricks in regards to the home, it is in its use for the exterior of the home. After all, we know that brick is one of the most durable home materials available. However, there is more to using bricks than simply as an exterior siding choice (although that is certainly a prime way to use it!) – It is also valuable as a design element.

Contrary to what one might think, brick does not have to be a cold and unwelcoming design element. Rather, when used correctly, it can add a bright, fun, textural element to virtually any space. Here are some ideas to consider.

  1. Have just one wall of a room left as exposed bricks. The contrast of brick with smooth walls and wood floors results in a modern, sleek design sometimes referred to as “unfinished.” To take it a step further, use a low nap paint roller and paint the walls a coordinating color.
  2. If you want to take the exposed brick wall a step further, consider having the brick wall partially covered with drywall that is broken away to leave the exposed brick behind it. This lends an air of an Old World villa or bistro. This look works great in spaces such as office foyers, restaurants, or a home where the taste is a bit eclectic.
  3. Do you have a long narrow hallway? Then having one wall as brick is great way tbrick-wallo add interest. Add a coat of light colored paint to make the space seem more airy and open.
  4. Add some elements of interest to an open floor plan by having brick columns added to your space. Leave them in their natural color or paint them to coordinate. Either way, they will add contrast and dimension.
  5. In the bathroom or bedroom, having a single brick wall can add a sense of warmth and harmony. Consider using bricks in a contrasting color to also add interest and a modern flair.
  6. Divider walls are a great way to break up a large open space. Whether you use the brick from floor to ceiling or only as a base for a countertop, the brick will draw the eye to the architecture of a room.
  7. Brick pavers are perfect for not only the outside walkway and patio, but as a floor for your kitchen or mancave. Available in a wide range of colors and sizes, you are sure to find brick pavers to suit your style.

As people begin to see brick as more than just an exterior siding option, there will be more and more usage of bricks for both the interior and exterior of the home. Be it for the flooring in the kitchen to the wall of the family room, bricks are a great way to add style and personality to your space.
